Mai Tai Cocktail Recipe

The Mai Tai cocktail (roughly translated from Tahitian as Out of This World) is a firm favourite with rum fans and cocktail fans in general, the reasons are obvious if you try this cocktail recipe yourself.

A few of these and you will be out of this world too…

Mai Tai Rum CocktailIngredients:

Optional Garnishes:

  • Pineapple Slice
  • Lime Slice
  • Mint Sprig
  • Cocktail Umbrella

Half-fill large goblet glass or any tall glass with crushed ice, add the ingredients in the order they are listed above. Then stir well and garnish with what you have, you can just use a mint sprig and lime slice for a more traditional garnish but I like to throw it all in there.

You can substitute the Mount Gay for any quality gold rum.

Enjoy, If the weather improves today I’ll be sampling a couple of Mai Tai cocktails myself this evening.

The pic looks really nice and the drink looks tasty and i hope i don´t offend but i`m sorry to say, it isn`t a Mai Tai..

Here is a Mai Tai, originally made by Trader Vic:

    THE ORIGINAL FORMULA

2 ounces 17-year-old J. Wray Nephew Jamaican rum
    1/2 ounce French Garnier Orgeat
1/2 ounce Holland DeKuyper Orange Curacao
    1/4 ounce Rock Candy Syrup
    Juice from one fresh lime

Shake and garnish with half of the lime shell inside the drink and float a sprig of fresh mint at the edge of the glass.

As we all know the 17 year old JWN rum isn´t available to us exsising today only in a very few places. So we use:

TRADER VIC`s SANCTIONED RECIPE from Intoxica:

    1 oz dark Jamaican rum
    1 oz Martinique rum
1 oz fresh lime juice (one lime)
    0.5 oz curacao
0.25 oz each of orgeat and simple syrup

Mix all ingredients and shake with ice.Strain into a glass over crushed ice. Garnish with lime shell and a sprig of mint.

    Cheers!

    No offense taken. :)

Thanks for the traditional recipe, I considered posting that rather than this but, sad though it is, this is the recipe that is being sold as a Mai Tai in less scrupulous bars around the world.

Regardless of what it is, it’s tasty! Thank you for your comment.
